Unifeeder Group, a part of DP World Marine Services, has finalized a long-term charter agreement to add two more methanol-fueled container feeder vessels to their fleet.

The charter agreements were made in collaboration with German ship owning group Elbdeich Reederei and Norwegian shipowner MPC Container Ships, each contributing one vessel. The 1250 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) vessels will be integrated into Unifeeder’s European network with delivery expected in 2026.

This additional investment supports Unifeeder Group’s drive to reduce emissions across its operations. The group is also working to increase fuel efficiency in their fleet and is encouraging the use of biofuels in its traditional vessels.

Survival of the Fittest for Shortsea Shipping Market

Unifeeder is working with industry partners to tackle the issue of renewable methanol supply, requiring commitments to establish production at a scale sufficient to replace conventional fossil fuels in the industry.

DP World Marine Services, the parent company of Unifeeder Group, had previously announced a significant reduction in its carbon footprint in 2023 and has set a goal for 5% of its marine power to be sourced from zero-emissions fuels by 2030.

Jesper Kristensen, Group CEO of Unifeeder Group, says the investment marks a significant step towards the green transformation of their fleet and operations.

“We anticipate the vessels to enter into operation in the next two years, advancing our steadfast commitment to sustainable solutions,” said Kristensen.

Unifeeder Group has set ambitious decarbonisation goals, committing to a 25% reduction in emissions by 2030 and aiming to reach net-zero by 2050. The company aims to achieve these goals by prioritizing fuel-efficient practices, regular maintenance and refitting processes of their existing fleet, and promoting a culture of learning and collaboration to share effective carbon reduction strategies across markets.
