Tanker Grounded off Coney Island, NY

After experiencing a steering problem the tanker “White Sea” ran aground off of Coney Island New York. The Gotahamist tells us:

Tanker White Sea Aground Off Coney Island The White Sea, has run aground in the Ambrose Channel, which is a shipping channel south of Lower New York Bay, off Staten Island, Coney Island, Breezy Point and NJ’s Sandy Hook. The Coast Guard says that there are no reports of injuries.

The 800-foot tanker is carrying 455,000 gallons of “low sulfur fuel oil”, none of which has spilled. The Coast Guard says “the ship’s crew deployed a containment boom in case anything were to leak,” per the Staten Island Advance. Read More…

Marine Log tells us the following:

The White Sea, owned by the Tanker Pacific Company on a time charter to Westport Shipping, has suffered hull breaches in the fore port peak tank and the No.1 port ballast tank.

There are no reports of product in the water. Its crew deployed an oil containment boom around the vessel as a precaution.

There have been no reports of injuries.

A Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook 25-foot rescue boat has established a safety zone around the vessel. Read More….
