A giant Hanjin containership suffered a fire Friday while underway just south of the Suez Canal.
Local media has identified the ship as the UK-flagged Hanjin Green Earth, a 13,100 TEU containership built in 2013.
The fire broke out in a stack of containers towards the stern while the vessel was underway 48 km to the south of the canal on Friday evening. The fire was put out in a matter of hours by emergency response vessels.
No injuries or pollution has been reported.
The fire did not impact vessel traffic in the Suez Canal, reports said.
AIS shows the vessel “not under command” near Port Said as of 17:02 GMT Sunday.
