As part of an effort to draw more young people to a career at sea, the International Maritime Organization has selected the theme #CareerAtSea for the upcoming Day of the Seafarer 2015, an annual day of recognition held every June 25th for the world’s 1.5 million seafarers and the contributions they make to international trade and the world economy.
The IMO says that this year’s campaign aims to inspire young people to consider a career at sea by painting a picture of seafaring as a viable, attractive and exciting option for those making their career and education decisions.
This year the International Maritime Organization is shifting its focus to maritime education. We want you to consider a career at sea. Most people go to work in offices, factories and shops, but it’s a different picture for seafarers: an office can be a hundred thousand-ton oil tanker or a cargo ship navigating the world’s oceans with beautiful landscapes.
This year’s campaign will show how the multi-faceted maritime world offers a series of rich and fulfilling career opportunities for young people, both at sea and ashore.
So we’ll be showing you what a career at sea could look like and hope to inspire young people to consider a #CareerAtSea.
In addition to the Day of the Seafarer theme, the IMO has also launched the IMO Maritime Ambassadors scheme to draw more young people towards a maritime industry profession.
To kick things off, the IMO has released the below video showing how a career at sea compares to an ordinary desk job:
