Norwegian offshore service provider Viking Supply Ships has made a significant move to enhance its fleet’s capabilities in the subsea sector. The company on Monday announced securing a contract for four 100-ton heave-compensated offshore cranes, to be installed on its ice-classed anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessels.
The advanced cranes will significantly expand the vessels’ operational range, allowing them to undertake a wider variety of assignments in both the oil and gas industry and renewable energy projects, including offshore wind. This strategic upgrade positions Viking Supply Ships to meet the growing demand in the subsea sector.
“This investment will substantially enhance our fleet’s capabilities, allowing us to serve a broader range of client needs in the evolving offshore energy landscape,” a company spokesperson stated.
The project, with a total investment of approximately 50 million USD, includes additional modifications to certain vessels. These upgrades involve the construction of ROV-hangars and the installation of launch and recovery systems for ROVs. The company plans to finance the project using cash on hand and existing credit facilities.
The delivery of the cranes is scheduled to begin in July 2026, with a phased installation process thereafter. This timeline allows Viking Supply Ships to gradually integrate these new capabilities into its operations, ensuring a smooth transition and minimal disruption to ongoing services.
The company’s fleet consists of six ice-class AHTS.
