Seafarers International Union has announced the passing of its long-time president Michael Sacco.
Sacco died of natural causes on December 28, 2023, in St. Louis, Missouri, surrounded by family members. He was 86 years old.
Sacco was the longest-serving president in SIU history, having led the organization from 1988 until his retirement in February 2023. As the largest North American union for merchant mariners, the Seafarers International Union (SIU) represents professional U.S. merchant mariners sailing aboard U.S.-flag vessels in various trades. SIU members work in deck, engine, and steward departments on a wide range of vessels.
In a statement, the AFL-CIO described Sacco as “a beloved champion for generations of merchant mariners America’s working families.”
The International Transport Workers’ Federation called Sacco a “tireless advocate for better wages, working conditions, and safety standards for seafarers worldwide.”
“The American maritime unions hold a unique place in the world,” said ITF General Secretary Stephen Cotton. “Mike’s influence both before he became President and then during his record breaking 35 years at the helm set an example not only in the US but across the globe.”
Various tributes from SIU members and other colleagues can be found here.
Kutis Funeral Home has posted an obituary of SIU President Emeritus Micael Sacco here. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tony Sacco Memorial Scholarship Fund, Charleston Port & Seafarers Society or St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital.
