‘Pink Corridor’ Project to Study Nuclear-Powered Container Route Across Atlantic

Lloyd’s Register, A.P. Moller-Maersk and two major container ports are teaming up to examine what it would take to operate a nuclear-powered containership between the United States and United Kingdom.

The initiative, dubbed the “Pink Corridor,” brings together Lloyd’s Register, Maersk, South Carolina Ports and the Port of Felixstowe to study a theoretical nuclear-powered container shipping route between Charleston and Felixstowe.

The project is not aimed at putting a nuclear-powered containership into service anytime soon. Instead, it will focus on the regulatory and operational groundwork that would have to be completed before such a service could become possible.

Using a conceptual nuclear-powered containership as its basis, the study will examine port access, vessel security, nuclear safeguards, cyber resilience, emergency response, insurance and the challenge of aligning maritime regulations with nuclear regulatory requirements.

“The Pink Corridor joint development programme is an important step for the application of nuclear technology in merchant shipping,” said Nick Gross, Lloyd’s Register’s Global Containerships Segment Director.

“By taking a practical, collaborative approach, the project will examine the security and safeguards that would need to be addressed for safe operations,” he added. “The partnership brings together industry-leading players across shipping, ports and classification, reflecting the growing interest in nuclear technology as a route to more sustainable maritime operations.”

The project also fits into a broader push by Washington and London to explore civilian maritime applications for nuclear technology. Lloyd’s Register said the work is expected to support maritime development under the U.S.-UK Technology Prosperity Deal, which includes a commitment to explore civil maritime nuclear applications and the possibility of establishing a shipping corridor between the two countries.

“As a major U.S. East Coast port, Charleston is always looking for innovative, cost effective and sustainable ways to move freight,” said Tom Boyle, SC Ports’ Director of Vessel Operations and Carrier Sales. “The conceptual Pink Corridor project allows for the study of the possibility of a nuclear-powered maritime corridor.”

The initiative comes as interest in commercial nuclear propulsion gains momentum after decades largely confined to naval vessels and icebreakers.

The Trump administration has made maritime nuclear technology part of its broader effort to rebuild U.S. maritime capabilities. The U.S. Maritime Administration recently signed an agreement with nuclear technology developer CORE POWER to explore a pathway toward U.S.-flagged nuclear-powered commercial ships.

The MARAD-CORE POWER agreement is designed to tackle many of the same hurdles facing the Pink Corridor, including regulatory approval, port operations, crew credentialing, nuclear fuel and lifecycle services, insurance and financing. It followed earlier agreements with the ports of Long Beach and Corpus Christi to explore small modular reactors and other maritime nuclear applications.

“President Trump has made it clear that American energy dominance and maritime strength go hand in hand,” Maritime Administrator Stephen Carmel said in announcing the CORE POWER agreement. “Nuclear propulsion is a serious commercial opportunity, but it must be approached as a complete system — safe, secure, licensable, and investable.”

Nuclear propulsion could potentially offer commercial ships enormous endurance while eliminating carbon emissions from onboard fuel combustion, but significant obstacles remain.

Unlike conventional marine fuels, nuclear propulsion brings together two highly regulated industries with different international rules and oversight structures. Questions surrounding reactor licensing, nuclear liability, insurance, crew qualifications, security, waste handling and whether ports would allow nuclear-powered merchant ships to call all remain unresolved.

There is currently no comprehensive international regulatory framework governing nuclear-powered commercial vessels.

Lloyd’s Register has been working to address that gap. Last year, the classification society released what it described as the maritime industry’s first detailed framework for integrating nuclear technology into commercial shipping and offshore operations.

The Pink Corridor also builds on a 2024 regulatory assessment conducted by Lloyd’s Register and CORE POWER that was later formalized with Maersk through a joint development project examining the safety, operational and regulatory requirements for advanced nuclear-powered container shipping.

For now, the Charleston-Felixstowe route remains entirely conceptual.

The first phase is intended to identify what would actually be required to make such a corridor possible. Those findings could lead to a second phase examining engineering, regulatory, legislative, security and nuclear safeguards issues in greater detail.

But the involvement of Maersk, two major container ports and one of the world’s largest classification societies marks another sign that nuclear propulsion is moving from a largely theoretical discussion toward serious consideration by the commercial shipping industry.
