Mitsui O.S.K. Lines will equip its LR1 product tanker, Nexus Victoria, with the an onboard CO2 capture system.
The installation will mark the first commercial installation of a CO2 capture system on a vessel by a Japanese operator.
The “Filtree System” is a hybrid scrubber-CCS system manufactured by Rotterdam-based CO2 capture and storage (CCS) company Value Maritime. It can eliminate 99% of sulfur oxides and particulate matter from exhaust gases and recover up to 10% of CO2. The captured CO2 can be supplied to greenhouses, synthetic fuel companies, and other end users.
The Nexus Victoria, at 75,000 dwt, will mark Value Maritime’s largest vessel installation to date and the first involving a LR1 product tanker. Installation is expected to take place before the end of the year.
“Hopefully this is the first of many Japanese clients that we can support in achieving decarbonisation initiatives,” said Laurens Visser, Commercial Manager at Value Maritime.
The initiative aligns with MOL’s environmental strategy to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The company said it is actively expanding its business in the CCS/CCUS value chain, securing new projects, and speeding up value chain development.
