Under perfect sailing conditions since leaving Newport, Rhode Island, the course record for the historic 635 nautical mile Newport-Bermuda Race was fully destroyed by Rambler, the 90-foot Reichel-Pugh designed maxi yacht owned by George David.
Averaging over 16 knots, Rambler lowered the course record by 14 hours to 39hrs, 39 mins, 18 seconds. The previous record was set a decade ago by Roy Disney’s Pyewacket.
A delighted George David commented this morning, “These were perfect conditions. The most exciting moment was when we hit 26 knots. I’m so pleased with our performance. We have reduced the record by 25% – Not bad for a boat that is now 10 years old. This Rambler is the best boat I have ever owned!”
Last year, George David chartered Rambler 100, an even more extreme sailing yacht for the Fastnet Race, however the yacht capsized in spectacular fashion after it’s keel snapped off unexpectedly.
