Maersk Line, the world’s largest container shipping company, has set itself a bold new target to cut CO2 emissions by 60% by 2020.

Maersk Line Chief Commercial Officer Stephen Schueler was in Newport, Rhode Island last week speaking before a group of customers at a session on “The Future of Sustainable Supply Chains” when he unveiled the Maersk Line Sustainability Update, highlighting how Maersk Line is committed to finding new ways of promoting social and economic progress through trade with the lowest possible impact on the environment.

“We lead the way in ‘doing more with less’,” commented Signe Bruun Jensen, Global Head of Sustainability at Maersk Line. “We constantly seek out innovative and commercially viable ways to reduce our environmental impacts, be it CO2 and other air emissions, ballast water, or the materials we use to build our vessels. Therefore we have set a bold target. We will reduce CO2 emissions per container moved by 60% by 2020 compared to levels from 2007.”

With the launch of this new CO2 reduction target, Maersk Line is accelerating the effort to reduce its carbon footprint while growing the business.

In 2014, Maersk Line also launched the Carbon Pact challenge. The Carbon Pact is a long-term partnership where Maersk Line commits to a CO2 target specifically tailored to the business of the individual customer. As part of the agreement, both Maersk and the customer also pledge to jointly drive transparency and promote more sustainable procurement, raising the bar for the entire industry.

“Maersk Line shares aspirations for sustainable, profitable growth with many of our customers. By committing to reducing supply-chain emissions, we’re demonstrating our commitment to delivering tangible carbon savings” says Stephen Schueler, Chief Commercial Officer at Maersk Line.
