Incident Photo of The Week – M/V Marco Polo

The 128-m ferry Marco Polo, with 41 passengers and 64 crew, ran aground on the Croatian island of Sit on Oct. 24 at 0250LT while cruising on its regular Rijeka-Split-Dubrovnik-Barin service at 25 knots. No injuries were reported and the accident has been attributed to human error.

Experts from Smit Salvage Company in Rotterdam were called in to help refloat the vessel but the ship has suffered enormous damage.  Whether or not salvage has been declared is unknown however ferry owner Jadrolinija head Mr. Slavko Loncar said on Nov. 8 that the MV Marko Polo would not be scrapped and her final status is known on 17 Nov.
