Singapore-based X-Press Feeders has placed an order for eight 1,170 TEU containerships to be powered by dual-fuel green methanol or conventional fuel.

X-Press Feeders will operate the ships in its Europe and America trade routes with the first vessels set for delivery in late 2023 and all by the end of 2024.

The order was placed by X-Press Feeders Group’s ship-owning subsidiary Eastaway.

The new ships are designed by naval architects TECHNOLOG Servies GmbH. Each vessel will be outfitted with dual-fuel engines that can operate on regular fuel or green methanol. X-Press Feeders says the highly fuel-efficient vessels will align with its practices of environmental stewardship to achieve carbon-neutral shipping by 2050. “Moreover, they will help us move closer to the target of operating their first ‘zero-emission ready’ vessel by 2025,” the company said.

Reports on Tuesday said the order actually comprised of 16 ships to be built by New Dayang Shipbuilding Co. and Ningbo Xinle Shipbuilding Group in China.

“We are very excited to welcome these ships into our European and Americas network,” said Shmuel Yoskovitz, X-Press Feeders’ CEO. “These newbuild vessels will provide cutting-edge technology to deliver a balance of environmental sustainability and operational excellence. X-Press Feeders is committed to maintaining an eco-friendly approach to expanding and modernising our global operated fleet.”
