This week the gCaptain team is in New Orleans attending the annual International WorkBoat Show. The show is huge, with thousands of visitors from all over the world and easily a few hundred exhibitors sprawled throughout the Morial Convention Center. Yesterday, we were able to meet with a number of the largest companies operating in the maritime and offshore industries, something that is always good for us (and you).
The highlight of the day was Admiral Thad Allen’s Shipyard Day Keynote address. For those of you who missed it, Ben Strong from the Amver blog has a good write up and be sure to click over to the full article for a roundup of tweets from Allen’s speech.
If you weren’t able to attend Thad Allen’s presentation today at the International Boat Show here is the breakdown of Tweets we provided. It was nice to see our old boss today. Despite a hoarse voice he provided an excellent overview of leadership in complex incidents drawing on his experience from Hurricane Katrina, Haiti, and the Deepwater Horizon spill. He also answered questions from the audience.
What’s he up to now? He’s working as a Fellow at the Rand Corporation. Want to hear more from Allen? Check out his interview with the Harvard Business Review.
For those of you in the New Orleans area today and tomorrow, I highly suggest coming by the show.
A week after Aiviq arrived at Tampa Ship LLC in Florida a new set of photos shows the vessel fully repainted in U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker red. The transom at the stern of the ship reveals the vessel’s likely new name: Storis.
The U.S. Coast Guard has closed on the $125m fixed-price deal to acquire and convert icebreaking supply ship Aiviq from Offshore Surface Vessels LLC, part of Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO).
U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Stratton has returned from a 110-day Arctic patrol. Stratton extended U.S. surface vessel presence this summer to above 72°N latitude, waters traditionally reserved for icebreakers and ice-capable ships.
