Wallenius Wilhelmsen has announced the signing a new contract with an undisclosed major electric vehicle manufacturer for shipping EVs from Asia to Europe and North America.
The contract, which will last until the end of 2025, includes both land and sea services. The contract also includes an agreement to use and pay for biofuel. Wallenius Wilhelmsen said the contract rates reflect the “current strong demand and tight balance in the market.”
“We will prioritize customers who are looking to work with us both on land and at sea, and who share our ambition to reduce emissions in the supply chain,” says Pia Synnerman, Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s Chief Customer Officer.
Wallenius Wilhelmsen aims to transition to sustainable energy sources and is currently in dialogue with customers to ensure that sustainable fuel is included in new contracts. As of now, biofuel is the only viable option, the company said.
“The manufacturers of electric vehicles that we talk to have high ambitions to further strengthen their decarbonization efforts. I am therefore pleased that we have signed a contract with a major EV manufacturer which includes payment for biofuel,” says Synnerman.
Shipping electric vehicles on board ships presents a unique set of challenges, particularly concerning the risk of fires and firefighting procedures.
Wallenius Wilhelmsen this week announced it has signed its first contract on the supply of sustainable with ExxonMobil, supporting its goal of achieving a net-zero emissions service by 2027. The first biofuel delivery is scheduled for July.
“The biofuel from ExxonMobil contains 30 percent biofuel and 70 percent conventional fuels. It is the best option we have available for decarbonization of the fleet today,” says Jon Tarjei Kråkenes, head of the Orcelle Accelerator at Wallenius Wilhelmsen.
