Oslo-based roll-on/roll-off shipping company, Wallenius Wilhelmsen, has announced the expansion of its fleet with the addition of four new next-generation Shaper Class pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) vessels.

The follow-on order comes as a part of the company’s ambitious strategy to achieve net zero emissions by 2027.

The dual fuel vessels are designed to operated on alternative fuel sources, like methanol, upon delivery. The vessels are also equipped to be ammonia-ready, ensuring that they will be capable of transitioning to ammonia fuel as soon as it is safely and securely available.

The Shaper-class vessels will have a 9,300 CEU capacity, placing them among the world’s largest Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTC).

The order with Jinling Shipyard (Jiangsu) now totals eight Shaper Class vessels, with Wallenius Wilhelmsen retaining options for four more vessels. The company expects the first of the ordered vessels to be delivered in the second half of 2026, while the four additional vessels announced today will be delivered between May and November 2027.

The strategic move is a clear indication of Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s intent to significantly shape the shipping industry and accelerate its journey towards net-zero emissions.

“Together with our customers we are committed to further shaping our industry and accelerating towards net zero. These new vessels are a vital part of that journey,” says Xavier Leroi, EVP & COO Shipping Services.

In addition to the Shaper Class vessels, Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s newbuild program includes 12 “Aurora” class vessels. These vessels, which were ordered from Xiamen Shipbuilding in China, are also designed to be environmentally friendly with ammonia-ready engines and a 9,100 CEU capacity. Deliveries of these vessels are set to begin in the second half of 2024.
