German and Swedish Coast Guards Arrive Near ‘Yi Peng 3’ In Escalating Cable Damage Incident
The investigation surrounding Chinese bulker carrier Yi Peng 3 suspected of damaging two submarine cables in the Baltic Sea continues to expand.
According to this report from the popular European shipping magazine Shipgaz, the timber-laden M/V Mirabelle had just one officer on watch when the vessel grounded last week in Hardanger Fjord, Norway. It’s also being reported that the grounding occurred after the mate on watch had fallen asleep.
While all 11 men on board were safely evacuated, the same was not the case 5 years ago when the Mirabelle (ex Karen Danielsen) struck the Great Belt Bridge, killing the officer on watch who also happened to have fallen asleep.
Ironically, the M/V Mirabelle also grounded in Hardanger Fjord, Norway in December 2008.
