SOUTHPORT, CT– The North American Marine Environment Protection Association Founding Chairman, Clay Maitland, announced that United States Coast Guard Vice Admiral Brian Salerno (Ret.) will join its Board effective immediately. VADM Salerno recently retired from the Coast Guard where he was Deputy Commandant for Operations.
“NAMEPA is thrilled that VADM Salerno is joining our efforts to ‘Save our Seas’” enthused Maitland. “Brian’s Marine Safety background will contribute greatly to NAMEPA’s growth and expansion of engaging industry and educating seafarers, port communities and students about marine environment protection.
Vice Admiral Brian M. Salerno became the Deputy Commandant for Operations, U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters, Washington, DC, in May 2010. He had oversight of the strategic integration of operational missions and the optimization of policy development and mission execution consistent with the Services’ national priorities.
Prior to assuming his Deputy position, Vice Admiral Salerno was the Assistant Commandant for Marine Safety, Security and Stewardship. He also served as the Assistant Commandant for Policy and Planning, and as the Director of Inspections and Compliance at Coast Guard Headquarters.
In his roles as Assistant Commandant, Vice Admiral Salerno was responsible for developing and promulgating national marine safety, security and environmental protection doctrine, policy, and regulations, as well as ensuring policy alignment throughout the Coast Guard and among federal and international partners. In addition, he led and oversaw the important work of numerous federal advisory committees, industry/stakeholder partnerships, and international delegations on marine safety, security, and environmental protection.
