The Lloyd’s Register Code for Lifting Appliances in a Marine Environment (CLAME) Code Notice 2 introduces several key updates that will affect shipyards looking to install shiplift and transfer systems. These changes focus on enhancing safety through a risk-based approach, particularly addressing “single points of failure” in the load path by requiring either redundancy or the application of risk factors.

A comprehensive Q&A video featuring Robert Taylor, the leading expert on vertical ship lift systems, delves into the specifics of these changes. Taylor breaks down what shipyards need to know about compliance, different methods of defining system capacity, and how the new regulations will affect shiplift designs moving forward. He also explains how shiplift systems are now subject to mandatory risk assessments. Shiplift systems are generally classified as Risk Class 2 or “High Risk” lifting applications due to the potential for damage to both the vessel and the lifting appliance.

For winch-based systems, these updates will necessitate significant redesigns, such as adding secondary braking systems and increasing the size of wire ropes and motors.

No Changes Required for Bardex® Systems

While these changes will impact wire rope designs, the Bardex®exclusive OmniLiftTM line of shiplift systems remain unaffected. Due to the inherent design of chain jack systems, they do not have the single-point-of-failure concerns that the updated code seeks to address. This makes Bardex® systems an ideal solution for shipyards looking for safe, reliable, and compliant lifting systems—without needing extensive, unproven redesigns.
