absThe American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) reached a significant milestone today by registering over 200 million gross tons, corresponding to approximately 12,000 ABS-classed vessels worldwide and 105 flag states.

Along with Japanese classification society ClassNK, they are the only other international classification society to have achieved this milestone.

“This important milestone reflects our commitment to providing best-in-class service to the marine and offshore industries,” said ABS Chairman and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki. “Over the past decade, we have made strategic investments in research and technology, workforce development and training programs in order to meet the evolving needs of our client’s worldwide.”

Since 2000, ABS has doubled the tonnage of its registered fleet; a key factor in the expansion has been the society’s leadership position in the new vessel orderbook. More than 21% of new vessels on order are set for ABS class, which is the largest percentage of any classification society in the world.

“The success of ABS is really a testament to the industries we serve,” comments Wiernicki. “We are proud to work alongside some of the very best in the marine and offshore industries. It is that spirit of cooperation that allows ABS to continue to be a leader in the classification industry.”

Throughout its 150 years of service, ABS has been a mission-driven organization focused on promoting the security of life and property and protecting the natural environment.  Today ABS carries out this mission through key research and technology projects helping to identify practical solutions to the many challenges being faced by the marine and offshore industry.  Whether assessing the impact of regulatory requirements or conducting analysis to improve energy efficiency, ABS’ team of world-class professionals provide tailored services to meet the unique circumstances of each client.

“At ABS, we are committed to quality services that leverage innovative thinking,” said Wiernicki. “Our goal is to help the industry construct and operate maritime and offshore assets in a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible manner.”
