We’re getting our first look at the Mauritian tanker that ran aground Thursday on Reunion Island, the overseas French department in the Indian Ocean.
The tanker, MT Tresta Star, built in 2019, grounded after losing power and drifting ashore as powerful Tropical Cyclone Batsurai passed by the island.
Video released by French Navy from Friday shows heavy surf pounding the tanker against the lava rock coastline.
Authorities apparently rigged a zip line to evacuate all 11 crew members overnight in extremely treacherous conditions.
The ship is not laden with cargo but is at risk of spilling fuel oil. Photos indicate the hull of the tanker has been breached and at least some oil has escaped into the environment.
