China has conducted a series of military exercises codenamed “Joint Sword 2024B” around Taiwan, raising tensions in the region and drawing international concern.

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) exercises, which took place in the Taiwan Strait and surrounding areas, have been characterized by the Pentagon as “irresponsible, disproportionate, and destabilizing.” The drills appear to be a response to Taiwan President Lai Ching-te’s recent national day speech, in which he asserted that China has no right to represent Taiwan.

China’s defense ministry issued a stern warning, stating that these drills represent an “increase in pressure against Taiwan independence” and suggesting that further actions may follow. “The People’s Liberation Army’s actions will be pushed further with each ‘Taiwan independence’ provocation until the Taiwan issue is completely resolved,” a ministry spokesperson said.

The U.S. government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining stability in the region. “Deterrence remains strong in the Indo-Pacific, and the Department remains confident in its current force posture and operations in the region,” said Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder.“ He also reiterated the U.S. stance on the issue, saying, “The United States remains committed to its longstanding one China policy, guided by the Taiwan Relations Act, the Three Joint Communiqués, and the Six Assurances.”

The Chinese military described the drills as a “stern warning” to Taiwan independence forces, claiming them to be “a legitimate and necessary operation for safeguarding state sovereignty and national unity.” The exercises covered nine areas around Taiwan, including locations on the island’s east and west coasts, as well as near Taiwan-controlled islands adjacent to the Chinese coast.

As tensions continue to simmer, the international shipping community will be closely monitoring developments in this crucial maritime chokepoint, which is vital for global trade and security.
