Sports apparel leader Nike has teamed up with French shipping group CMA CGM to reduce the carbon emissions from its ocean shipping, part of a broader strategy by Nike to decarbonize its supply chain.
Under the agreement, Nike has agreed to purchase sustainable biofuel to cover 36% of Nike’s maritime transport volume with CMA CGM. The initiative is expected to reduce Nike’s CO2 emissions by 25,000 tons.
Nike is aiming to reduce its carbon footprint by 63% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050 through its Move to Zero initiative, which also includes reducing carbon emissions across its global supply chain by 30% by 2030.
CMA CGM echoes Nike’s commitment and is actively working towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. In 2020, the shipping group introduced ‘ACT WITH CMA CGM+’, a range of low-carbon solutions for customers. The initiative allows customers to analyze their environmental footprint, reduce carbon emissions through alternative energies like biofuel, LNG, and biomethane, and offset residual emissions through environmental projects.
“Collaborating with a key player like Nike and taking this major step towards decarbonization is an important achievement,” said Olivier Nivoix, Executive Vice President of CMA CGM Group Lines. “We are confident that our success will act as a catalyst, encouraging other carriers and customers to join us on this path to accelerate the transition towards a Net Zero industry.”
