The London P&I Club, a leading provider of marine Protection and Indemnity (P&I), announced today that CEO Ian Gooch will step down from his position later this year.
Gooch, who has led the company for 15 years and served as a Director of A.Bilbrough & Co., the managing company of The London P&I Club, for 21 years, will be succeeded by James Bean, pending regulatory approval.
James Bean, a qualified Solicitor with a solid history in the marine insurance industry since 2005, is set to take on the role of CEO. Bean joined NorthStandard’s senior leadership team in February 2023 and previously held the position of Group Managing Director at the Standard Club/
During the transition, Gooch will remain on the A Bilbrough & Co. team to provide support to Bean and the senior management team, ensuring a smooth changeover.
“I am confident that the Club will continue its growth as an independent mutual marine insurance provider under James’ leadership,” said Gooch.
Chairman of the London P&I Club, John M Lyras, said Bean will bring “first-rate credentials with extensive industry experience” to the role.

The London P&I Club provides marine mutual cover to approximately 90% of the world’s ocean-going tonnage. The company recently reported an 8.9% annual growth in its mutual tonnage, following a strong P&I renewal outcome in February 2024, indicating a positive financial performance.
