ABS just released news about two US-flagged liftboats that have been specified with their Wind IMR notation. Per ABS code, a Wind Turbine IMR Unit is “a mobile offshore unit primarily intended for the installation, maintenance, and repair of wind turbines, including pile driving, tower installation, and nacelle and blade installation.
This notation was released by ABS a year ago and these two vessels are among the first to receive this designation. Built at Gulf Island Marine Fabricators in Houma, LA, the Mino Marine designed LB Robert is scheduled for delivery later this year. The yet unnamed second liftboat will be an A.K. Suda, Inc. design, and is scheduled for delivery in July 2012. Both liftboats may likely be put to quick use in Rhode Island’s coastal waters as construction commences on the Cape Wind Project.
