A U.S. Navy pilot was safely recovered from the Atlantic Ocean today after the F/A-18E Super Hornet he was flying crashed approximately 45 miles off the Virginia Beach coast.
The U.S. Navy says that the crash occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. after the pilot ejected from the aircraft and a liferaft deployed. The officer was recovered by a fishing vessel.
The Navy reports that the pilot is conscious and was transported to Sentara Norfolk General by a Navy MH-60 Seahawk.
The incident is the second crash involving a U.S. Navy aircraft off Virginia in the last week. Just last Wednesday three people were killed when a U.S. Navy MH-53E helicopter crashed during a routine training operation approximately 20 miles east of Cape Henry, VA.
