Deltamarin and BAR Technologies have joined forces to introduce a new wind-optimized hull design equipped with rigid sails.

The new Aframax/LRII design, known as Aquilo, brings a noteworthy advancement in overall performance by incorporating a cutting-edge hull design with the Bar Tecnologies’ WindWings®? technology.

The Aquilo features an optimized hull to maximize wind-assisted propulsion. Key to the design is the aerodynamics achieved through the strategic positioning of the four WindWings and the AeroBridge, a novel deck house design with superior aerodynamic properties. The hull’s main dimensions and characteristics have been specifically tailored for operation with considerable wind assistance, leading to a significant improvement in fuel efficiency.

Simulations indicate that Aquilo’s results in a notable reduction in fuel consumption, averaging a daily consumption of less than 26.8mt/d at 14.5 knots and around 12.6mt/day at 12 knots in an average global route.

Deltamarin has previously worked on wind-assisted propulsion projects, including on the design for roll-on/roll-off vessels equipped with six Norsepower Rotor Sails for Louis Dreyfus Armateurs SAS (LDA). These sails represent a modernized version of the Fletner Rotors.
