Cargo Ship Goes Aground as Typhoon Meranti Hits China

Cargo ship Gan Tai Tai Zhou aground on Kinmen island, China.

Another casualty from Super Typhoon Meranti to report today with the grounding of a 42,000 ton containership near Xiamen, China.

The ship Gan Tai Tai Zhou was at an outer anchorage near Xiamen when Meranti struck the area Thursday with strong winds and intense rain. According to reports the container ship dragged anchor and ran aground on the southwest tip of Kinmen island.

It seems the ship’s crew may still be stuck on board the vessel officials try to determine options for rescue and salvage of the vessel.

Yesterday, gCaptain reported that Super Typhoon Meranti caused a 14,000 teu newbuild container ship break free from its moorings and strike shoreside in cranes in Kaohsiung port in Taiwan, causing the cranes to collapse.
