A MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company containership has caught fire at an anchorage in the UAE.
The UAE’s National Search and Rescue Center said it carried out a medical evacuation for an injured person on board to the Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City. The condition of the person is unknown at this time.
Video released by the agency shows three tugs spraying water over the stern of the vessel.
The vessel is reported to be the Panamanian-flagged MSC Rita, which was built in 2005 and has a capacity of just over 8,000 TEUs. AIS data from MarineTraffic.com shows the ship arrived at the Khalifa Anchorage at Abu Dhabi Ports’ Khalifa Port on June 6. The vessel has not transmitted data since its arrival.
Equasis data shows the MSC Rita is owned and operated by companies directly affiliated with MSC. It is insured by North of England P&I Association.
At time of publishing, it was unclear if the fire had been extinguished or not.
