Offshore wind turbine manufacturer Vestas has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with A.P. Moller-Maersk, Jeonnam Province, and Mokpo City for supply chain investment in South Korea’s offshore wind energy sector.

The agreement includes plans for a nacelle manufacturing facility and a logistics base at the Mokpo New Port Hinterland Complex, contingent on market growth and volume awarded to Vestas.

Besides manufacturing, Vestas plans to explore opportunities for collaboration with local suppliers for offshore wind turbine components. Additionally, Vestas and Maersk have expressed their commitment to boosting the local economy by employing local talent and partnering with local firms. In return, the administrative and financial backing required to develop a sustainable supply chain will be provided by Jeonnam Province and Mokpo City.

This agreement follows Vestas’ earlier announcement of potential collaboration with CS Wind, a South Korea-based manufacturer of wind turbine towers, to establish wind turbine manufacturing facilities in Korea.

Vestas previously partnered with Maersk in 2021 for the transportation of containerized parts and equipment from Vestas’ suppliers to its factories and service warehouses, including all airfreight shipments.

“South Korea has a promising offshore wind market with the potential to become a hub for accelerating offshore wind energy,” said Tommy Rahbek Nielsen, CEO at Vestas. “The agreement follows the strong technology offering we have with the V236-15 MW wind turbine and the recent commercial traction we have seen.”

Details of Vestas’ investment strategy are still in the works, with further information to be released once plans are finalized.

“We are pleased that Vestas trusts Maersk to be a valued partner, as it continues to support the green transition on a global scale by offering renewable energy solutions. This agreement, including the logistics operations connected with it is a testament to our end-to-end capabilities and is a milestone for our integrator strategy,” says Vincent Clerc, CEO at Maersk.
