A Florida trading company is in advanced talks to send Cuba the biggest cargo of US fuel since the Eisenhower administration as the island nation contends with an acute energy crisis.

The shipowner/managers Leonhardt & Blumberg report today that they have invited salvage companies for individual offers for the safe and successful refloating of their container vessel Hansa Berlin which grounded off the Cuban coast some 20 miles off Havana on Sunday. All crew were evacuated from the ship by helicopter and are safe ashore in Cuba.
Specialists have meanwhile arrived at the scene but bad weather conditions are still hampering efforts to board Hansa Berlin and make a clear assessment of potential damage to the environment, vessel and cargo. Representatives of Leonhardt & Blumberg in Hamburg are expected to arrive in Cuba on Thursday.
gCaptain spoke with the US State Department and the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) yesterday and permissions have been granted to at least one US salvage company, possibly others, to work on the salvage of this vessel.
