One person is missing from a chemical tanker after allegedly stabbing a fellow crew member during a fight and then jumping overboard, according to French search and rescue officials.
The incident took place on Tuesday on the Liberian-flagged MT Elandra Corallo as it was underway in the Coral Sea approximately 400 nautical miles off New Caledonia southwest Pacific Ocean.
The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Nouméa said it was alerted to the incident at around 5:30 p.m.
A search for the missing person was launched with four Good Samaritan ships in the area, but was called off at around 11:15 p.m. that night after returning no results.
The stab victim was airlifted from the vessel on Wednesday to a hospital in Koné and is believed to be in stable condition.
AIS data shows the Liberian-flagged Elandra Corallo as traveling from South Korea to New Zealand.
