Last Friday afternoon, the NASSCO-built ships MLP-1 USNS Montford Point and MLP-2 USNS John Glenn crossed paths off the coast of San Diego for a rare dual MLP photo opportunity.
USNS John Glenn left San Diego and was en-route to Everett, Washington while the Montford Point was entering the channel here in San Diego. The picture was captured in the vicinity of buoy 1SD off Pt. Loma.
Of note, John Glenn will be eventually heading to the Vigor Shipyard in Oregon, following a brief stay at Everett, for installation of the Core Capability Set (CCS) at Vigor, she is the ship in the background.
The Montford Point is in the foreground with the CCS installed on the mission deck which, according to the Navy, “allows for the easy transfer of vehicles, personnel and equipment from other vessels such as the Large, Medium-speed, Roll-on/Roll-off Ships onto Landing Craft, Air Cushioned vehicles for transportation to shore.”
The Montford Point just left Oregon and is back at NASSCO for additional work. She is scheduled to leave NASSCO in early June.
