Destin Sandlin’s popular YouTube channel SmarterEveryDay has already explained how the US Coast Guard (USCG) responds to distress signals and the science of USCG search patterns but this week Destin Sandlin looks at one of the workhorses of the US Coast Guard. It’s a Jet Driven workboat called the response boat medium (RB-Ms).
“This thing is incredible,” sais Sandlin. “It’s a 45 foot long, computer controlled jet boat that has hyper maneuverability, it can do all kinds of things we will explore in this video.”
Between 2006 and 2015 Marinette, in Green Bay Wisconsin, and Kvichak in Kent, Washington delivered a total of 174 RB-Ms to the USCG making it one of the most widely used safety and security boats in North America. Watch the video to find out more:

The United States is watching China's presence in its Arctic zone "very closely" amid concerns regarding the security of the US homeland, a senior US Arctic military official said.
The U.S. Coast Guard’s icebreaker Healy will not carry out its planned high-latitude Arctic mission this summer following a serious engineering casualty in July, a spokesperson said. The statement provides the clearest indication yet of the impact of the incident on the Coast Guard’s key icebreaker.
U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Healy suffered a significant engineering casualty during post-refit sea trials off the Washington coast before being towed back to Seattle on July 13 for an investigation and major repairs, the Coast Guard told gCaptain.
