Destin Sandlin’s popular YouTube channel SmarterEveryDay has already explained how the US Coast Guard (USCG) responds to distress signals and the science of USCG search patterns but this week Destin Sandlin looks at one of the workhorses of the US Coast Guard. It’s a Jet Driven workboat called the response boat medium (RB-Ms).
“This thing is incredible,” sais Sandlin. “It’s a 45 foot long, computer controlled jet boat that has hyper maneuverability, it can do all kinds of things we will explore in this video.”
Between 2006 and 2015 Marinette, in Green Bay Wisconsin, and Kvichak in Kent, Washington delivered a total of 174 RB-Ms to the USCG making it one of the most widely used safety and security boats in North America. Watch the video to find out more:
A week after Aiviq arrived at Tampa Ship LLC in Florida a new set of photos shows the vessel fully repainted in U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker red. The transom at the stern of the ship reveals the vessel’s likely new name: Storis.
The U.S. Coast Guard has closed on the $125m fixed-price deal to acquire and convert icebreaking supply ship Aiviq from Offshore Surface Vessels LLC, part of Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO).
U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Stratton has returned from a 110-day Arctic patrol. Stratton extended U.S. surface vessel presence this summer to above 72°N latitude, waters traditionally reserved for icebreakers and ice-capable ships.
