The Port of Boston welcomed its biggest containership to date over the weekend following a $850 million project to make the port “big ship ready.”

The Evergreen ship MV Ever Fortune called at the Port of Boston’s Conley Container Terminal on Sunday. At 1,100 feet long, the Ever Fortune is about the length of three football fields. Built in 2020, the 12,000 TEU vessel will connect Boston to several ports in East Asia via the Panama Canal.

Ever Fortune’s call was made possible thanks to a $850M investment to modernize and expand Conley Terminal and dredge Boston Harbor. With the addition of three large ship-to-shore cranes, a new deep-water berth, and a deepened Boston Harbor, Conley is now suited to serve larger vessels carrying up to 14,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).

“We are excited to welcome this new class of container ship to Boston,” said Massport Port Director Mike Meyran. “Being ‘big ship ready’ increases Conley Terminal’s capacity to handle cargo. Thanks to the Baker-Polito Administration and our federal, state and local partners, the investments we’ve made keep Boston competitive and ready for growth. Our infrastructure now opens new opportunities for our customers to ship more products and make global connections that were previously not possible.”

Conley Terminal is New England’s only full-service container terminal providing service to over 2,500 New England importers and exporters. Public terminals in the Port of Boston are owned by Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport).

The new neo-panamax cranes were manufactured by ZPMC in China and arrived at the port in June following a 10-week voyage from Shanghai, China.
