Israel Pushes EU to Designate Houthis as Terrorists
Israel has instructed its diplomatic missions in Europe to try to get the Iran-backed Houthi rebel group in Yemen designated as a terrorist organization.
Elon Musk’s SpaceX continues to penetrate the market for maritime satellite communications with Overseas Shipholding Group announcing an agreement to install Starlink satellite internet service across its fleet of Jones Act and US-flagged ships.
Since the introduction of Starlink’s Global Maritime service earlier this year, OSG’s IT department has been working to install Starlink equipment on every vessel in the fleet, with full installation expected by year end.
OSG said the installation is part of its commitment to improving connectivity for crewmembers and enhancing vessel communications. The availability of reliable internet access will allow seafarers to stay connected with loved ones, access streaming services and social media, and manage vessels more effectively.
“Our crew identified this as important, and we listened,” said Patrick O’Halloran, OSG’s Chief Operations Officer. “The goal of the Starlink install was to enhance vessel communications and improve our crew’s ability to connect with family and friends. Our seafarers are the greatest asset we possess, and we are glad to support them on this. Our investment in the Starlink technology represents a major step forward in our industry and highlights our commitment to improving the quality of life for our crewmembers while they are at sea.”
Based in Tampa, Florida, Overseas Shipholding Group offers liquid bulk transportation services in the U.S. Flag markets. Their fleet includes Suezmax crude oil tankers, ATBs, MR tankers, and non-Jones Act MR tankers participating in the U.S. Maritime Administration’s Tanker Security Program.
“The implementation of this service will further position OSG as a forward-thinking organization in the maritime industry,” said O’Halloran. “In addition to the benefits that Starlink provides to OSG’s crew, the availability of reliable, high-speed internet access while our ships are travelling across the globe will permit seafarers to better manage their vessels and communicate with shoreside staff.”
OSG is joining shipping companies Hagag-Lloyd, Maersk, MOL, and Anglo-Eastern in announcing Starlink installations on hundreds of ships in the global fleet.
