MSC Containership Loses Empty Containers Overboard Off Bermuda

An MSC containership lost more than three dozen empty containers overboard in heavy weather.

The Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre said it was advised via email of the incident last Friday, March 3, at 7:15 p.m.. The MSC Shristi reported losing 46 empty shipping containers at three different times during bad weather as the ship was underway approximately 350 nautical miles east of Bermuda, the BMOC said.

“Bermuda Radio has liaised with the US Coast Guard, and will broadcast Notice to Mariners Navigation Warnings accordingly,” the BMOC said in its alert.

The MSC Shristi is registerd in Liberia and managed by MSC Shipmanagement in Cyprus. The ship was built in 2005 and has a capacity of 4,738 TEUs.

The MSC Shristi was sailing from Boston to the Dominican Republic at the time of the cargo loss. AIS data from MarineTraffic.com shows the ship departed Caucedo in the Dominican Republic on March 5 bound for Port Said, Egypt.
