Japanese shipbuilder Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has announced to reorganize its shipbuilding business with the establishment of two separate, wholly-owned entities.

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co. will primarily undertake construction of ships that require intensive outfitting. The company will focus its business operations on ship engineering, design, manufacturing and repair of ferries, cargo and passenger ships, RO/RO vessels, special-purpose vessels, patrol vessels, and other types of vessels.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Structure will mainly engage in the construction of large ships and marine structures. Operations will be based out of Nagasaki City, Japan at the existing Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works facility.

Both new companies to be launched on January 1, 2018.

MHI says it will work closely with the two new companies and provide support towards the development of their business operations.
