A Liberian-flagged tanker has suffered an engine fire off Orchid Island, Taiwan, prompting a helicopter rescue by authorities.

The Taiwanese Coast Guard Administration reports that the MT Marquessa reported the incident on the morning of December 8 during its voyage from Laizhou, Shandong, China to Singapore.

Several agencies were dispatched to responded, including the Air Service Corps which airlifted eight crew members by helicopter. Sixteen crew members remain on board including the Captain, who has since reported that the fire was under control.

The vessel is expected to be towed to the port of Kaohsiung in Taiwan.

The MT Marquessa is a 104,000 dwt crude oil tanker built in 2006 and registered in Liberia.
