Old-Time Tall Ship Sets Sail with Modern-Day Power
Have you ever dreamed of learning to sail the seven seas aboard an old-time tall ship, complete with wood masts, rope ladders, custom-made sails—and modern-day Cat® engines? Then step...
Global tug and salvage operator Remolcadores Marracoi SL (REMARSL) chose a full Caterpillar Marine power and propulsion package for a new 55 ton bollard pull ASD tug recently ordered from Freinaval shipyards in Spain.
Twin MTA 523FP azimuth thrusters will be powered by a pair of Cat 3512C EPA IMO II V-12 diesel engines featuring 2 x 1765 kw @1800 rpm of rated power.
Auxiliary power will be delivered through 2 x Cat C9 engines.
Steerable with a custom-made controllable or fixed pitch propeller, Caterpillar notes their azimuth thrusters are available in both L-drive and Z-drive configurations. Customizable options include an innovative feathering BCP hub for even more vessel flexibility and efficiency. Based on a modular principle, most components are used in other Cat Propulsion products ensuring a proven, reliable design. Other benefits include low levels of noise and vibration as well as simplified installation and maintenance.

Manufactured in Lafayette, Indiana, the constant-speed 3512C engine offers the latest in electronic fuel system capabilities and state-of-the-art ADEMTM A4 Electronic Control Units (ECU). The electronic “power station” concept creates efficiencies between the control units, unit injectors, instrumentation and displays to perfectly balance power supply, fuel consumption and exhaust emissions at any given load.
