The Portuguese-flagged bulk carrier Barbro G has been refloated in the Detroit River. The 623-foot freighter, which was carrying 21,000 tons of wheat to Italy, ran aground on Monday morning outside Belle Isle Anchorage.
Fortunately, there were no reports of pollution, damage, injuries, or impact to commercial traffic. The U.S. Coast Guard said the vessel was successfully refloated on Tuesday with the assistance of three tugs.
The Great Lakes Towing Company played a crucial role in the operation, providing the necessary tugboats to aid in freeing the stranded vessel. Working closely with various stakeholders, including the vessel’s agents, Coast Guard, salvors, and the insurance company representing the vessel’s owners.
Following the approval from the Coast Guard, The Great Lakes Towing Company’s tugs initiated the operation and successfully freed the grounded vessel in less than two hours.
“Our team’s quick response and seamless coordination with the various entities involved underscore our commitment to ensuring the safety and efficiency of maritime operations. We are proud to have played a pivotal role in resolving this incident promptly and effectively,” said Lindsay Dew, Director of Operations & Compliance at The Great Lakes Towing Company.
The cause of the grounding remains under investigation.
