Watches evolved in the 17th century from spring-powered clocks, which appeared as early as the 14th century. During most of its history the watch was a mechanical device, driven by clockwork, powered by winding a mainspring, and keeping time with an oscillating balance wheel. Officers aboard ships where among the earliest buyers of watches because of the importance of accurate time to celestial navigation.
Today, there are many devices on a bridge that can provide a watch officer with accurate time but none are as quick and simple as an analogue watch. gCaptain has surveyed countless mariners on facebook, via our forum and on the phone to stock our store with only the best and most useful watches.
