Over the past year, Philadelphia photographer Charles Cerrone has gained access to wield his camera within the confines of one of the United States’ most historic shipyards, Aker Philadelphia Shipyard.
Modern tankers are now being constructed for ExxonMobil and Crowley on the same lands that constructed the Iowa-class battleships New Jersey and Wisconsin for the U.S. Navy.
“My work aims to show the life force behind these ships, showing the scale of their environment against the modest hands of those who weld them to life,” says Cerrone.
These photographs come together to give a seldom-seen glimpse into this unforgiving industrial environment.
