A video posted to the social media website TikTok shows the scary moment a lifeboat fails during a drill.

We are told the incident took place in September during a lifeboat drill aboard the Pacific Drilling drillship Pacific Meltem, which is currently stacked in Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. Since the video was posted two days ago, it has already been viewed over 770,000 times and counting on the social media platform.

We understand there was nobody injured in the incident and nobody was inside the boat when it fell.

Built in 2014 and registered in Liberia, the Pacific Meltem is an ultra-deepwater drillship capable of drilling in water depths up to 12,000 feet. It is classed by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), which you can hear referenced in the video.

According to the Pacific Drilling’s most fleet status update published in July, the Pacific Meltem was recently mobilized to Las Palmas where it joined two other Pacific Drilling drillships that are currently “smart stacked” amid low oil demand caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The downturn caused Pacific Drilling on Friday to file for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
