Some new video has popped up online showing a construction barge sinking on the Chicago River last Friday afternoon in the middle of downtown Chicago.
Witnesses said they heard a loud boom before the barge began taking on water and came to rest nearly fully submerged in the river.
Over the weekend the U.S. Coast Guard was restricting traffic on the Chicago River between the Lake and Randolph Street bridges as divers conducted surveys of the barge’s hull.
The barge was loaded with approximately 750 cubic yards of clay dirt when it sank. In a Coast Guard statement, it was unclear if the barge sank at its moorings or if it broke free from its moorings and then sank.
