UK-based chemical tanker owner and operator, Union Maritime, is set to equip its fleet with industry-leading wind propulsion technology.

The company is collaborating with BAR Technologies, the provider of WindWings. The innovative rigid sail technology promises an average daily saving of 1.5 tonnes of fuel per wing and significant CO2 reductions on typical global routes.

WindWings will be installed on a total of 34 newbuild vessels within Union Maritime’s fleet, including 14 LR2s, 12 chemical tankers, and 8 MRs.

Union Maritime is on a mission to surpass the International Maritime Organization’s updated greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets. Its goal is to reduce absolute emissions by 20% by 2030 (compared to 2008 levels) and to derive at least 5% of energy requirements from low- or zero-GHG sources by the same year.

The company’s fleet includes more than 70 vessels, comprising 52 tankers, 13 dry bulk carriers, and three offshore vessels. It also has placed orders for 35 newbuilds at various yards.

As the company deploys this new technology, it is also seeking a significant strategic equity investment in BAR Technologies.

Besides wind propulsion, Union Maritime’s green initiatives also include deploying dual-fuel LNG engines on up to 8 LR2s and working with BAR Technologies on the AeroBridge® superstructure, which promises improved efficiency and crew comfort.
