Malaysia-based offshore support vessel (OSV) provider ICON Offshore Berhad has confirmed details of an August 2 accident involving one of its vessels that tragically killed two people and seriously injured another.

In a statement released by ICON Offshore Berhad, the Board of Directors confirmed that the incident occurred on August 2, 2024, at approximately 10:30 p.m. at the Sapar Alpha platform near Bintulu, Malaysia, involving the vessel Icon Amara.

“We are deeply saddened to report that this incident resulted in two fatalities and one serious injury,” the statement reads.

An investigation into the cause of the incident is currently underway and ICON fully cooperating with the relevant authorities. The company assured stakeholders that the vessel Icon Amara and its crew members are fully insured and anticipates that the vessel will be restored to active duty following the completion of the investigation.

ICON’s Emergency Response Team was immediately mobilized to provide necessary support to the affected crew members and families. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and our deepest sympathies to the injured and their families,” the statement read. The company is committed to offering all possible assistance

The statement also noted that there was a delay in releasing details about the incident, as ICON worked closely with their client and relevant authorities to ensure all information was accurate and appropriately handled. “We appreciate your understanding and patience as we collaborate to address this challenging situation,” the Board added.

The Board clarified that the incident is not expected to have a material impact on the company’s overall operations or financial performance. “Icon remains committed to the safety and well-being of all personnel, and we will take all necessary steps to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future,” the company said.
