WISTA at 50
From small beginnings 50 years ago, WISTA has grown exponentially and expanded its mission to become a dynamic association representing diversity, equity and inclusion at the heart of global shipping...
The Captain’s Table Innovation Challenge, Hong Kong’s leading pitch competition focused on the maritime and logistics industry, is recruiting for its 3rd cohort.
The challenge, now in its 3rd year, is organized by not-for profit, Young Professionals in Shipping Network (Hong Kong) Limited. The objective of the challenge is clear: to build a sustainable future for maritime by connecting innovators to the corporates with the purpose of finding solutions to current and future industry specific problems. In a tech space that is fast filling up, and potentially becoming over crowded, The Captain’s Table sets itself apart by its not-for-profit nature. Organiser, Tabitha Logan, believes that being not-profit allows the platform to remain objective by avoiding the conflict of interest between profit and problem solving. “We want to become the go-to platform for the industry to collaborate and innovate with industry players and innovators”, says Tabitha. “Our objective since the founding of YPSN HK has consistently been to build a sustainable future for maritime and we do this by providing platforms for people to connect, and by attracting young talent to join the industry. The Captain’s Table is an extension of our strategy”, says co-organiser, Su Yin Anand.
Working with Chris O’Callaghan who leads HFW Consulting, we will be providing start-ups with an immersive bootcamp experience designed to enhance the business knowledge, personal skills and overall capabilities of the start-ups as they prepare to pitch live
This year we are delighted to once again be joined by sponsors from across the Shipping sector including our lead sponsor, the leading maritime law firm HFW. The organisers are working with HFW and other key sponsors including KC Maritime, Wah Kwong Shipmanagement, TCC Steampship, &Veson Nautical, to finalise problem statements which will be released in August 2021. It is clear from discussions that theindustry remains focused on decarbonisation, Regtech, voyage optimization, and procurement, and there is an active search for solutions in these areas.
“We are really excited about this year’s event. We reflected on the last 2 years and what we can do better. This year, we have focused on building our ecosystem. We have a strong list of mentors to provide support to our start-ups and an ecosystem of knowledge partners to help start-ups on their journey”, Tabitha adds.
Supported by InvestHK, the Captain’s Table Innovation Challenge will take place ‘live’ in Hong Kong in early December 2021 and streamed online. Finalists will pitch to judges and the winner stands to win US$25,000.
In addition to the financial prize, the winning startup will have access to 12 months of free legal support from HFW, social media support & business introductions from Lloyd’s Register, business coaching from HFW Consulting and fundraising advice from Betatron Venture Group.
Splash 24/7 is the official media sponsor for the event.
