Ferry workers on Tuesday threatened to continue their protest on Wednesday after blocking Calais' port for two days, forcing the closure of the Channel Tunnel linking France and England for several hours.
The British government said on Thursday it had called a meeting of its emergency response committee Cobra to discuss the migrant crisis in the French port of Calais and draw up contingency plans if further strike action exacerbates the situation.
Traffic was halted through the Channel Tunnel linking Britain and France on Tuesday after striking French ferry workers set fire to tires, while Britain's Foreign Office warned of migrants trying to get into vehicles queuing to enter the tunnel.
Eurotunnel, the operator of the undersea rail link between England and France, is selling its Calais-to-Dover ferry business to Danish rival DFDS to end its lengthy battle with British competition authorities.
