Back in January 2008, when COSPEARL LAKE became the world’s first VLCC vessel to be 100% equipped with mooring lines made with Dyneema® fiber, mooring lines were typically made with steel wire, which are heavier, and could be harder to handle, and potentially even dangerous.
Ten years on, synthetic lines made with Dyneema® fiber have consistently demonstrated high performance and reliability over lifetime, and improvements to crew safety and operational efficiency. Today, the COSPEARL LAKE still relies on the 22 mooring lines brought on board.
Now, in the latest stage of the long-standing partnership, COSCO Shipping Energy is bringing mooring lines made with Dyneema® fiber to more oil tankers – introducing a number of major benefits:
- With scientific design and authorized manufacturers, ropes made with Dyneema® fiber have been proven to serve VLCC for 10 years or even more
- Mooring ropes made with Dyneema® fiber are also safer for crews to handle and have significantly reduced the likelihood of hand, wrist or back injuries and eliminated the risk of backlash related to steel wire rope
- Ropes made with Dyneema® fiber are up to seven times lighter than a steel wire rope of the same strength and diameter. This makes them easier to handle and reduces the turnaround and docking operation times required for vessels of up to 300,000 tons
- Ropes with Dyneema® fiber are chemical resistant and don’t need grease or lubrication, which saves man power, avoids slippery decks and reduces pollution into the sea
