Revolution Wind has successfully installed its first offshore wind turbine, marking a significant milestone for Rhode Island and Connecticut’s first large-scale offshore wind farm.

The project, developed by Ørsted and Eversource, is set to create approximately 1,200 jobs across both states and boost their clean energy sectors.

Located about 15 miles south of Rhode Island and 32 miles southeast of Connecticut, Revolution Wind will utilize 65 Siemens Gamesa 11-megawatt turbines.

Once operational, it will generate 400 megawatts of clean energy for Rhode Island and 304 megawatts for Connecticut, powering over 350,000 homes.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee called it “a monumental moment for Revolution Wind, the Northeast region, and Rhode Island,” highlighting the strong public-private partnership driving the project.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont emphasized the project’s impact on clean energy delivery and job creation. “Revolution Wind is going to have a major impact in the Northeast when it comes to delivering clean energy,” he said.

The project’s construction involves hundreds of union workers and various vessels supporting work to install the wind farm’s foundations, two offshore substations, inter-array and export cables, and wind turbines. More than three-quarters of the turbine foundations are already in place offshore.

Three New England ports are also playing crucial roles in the construction. State Pier in New London, Connecticut serves as the staging and marshaling port, where local union labor assembles turbines.

In Providence, ProvPort handles the loadout of advanced foundation components, built by local union workers. The ECO EDISON, America’s first domestically built, owned, and crewed offshore wind service operations vessel, is based at ProvPort during construction. Additionally, Quonset Point in Rhode Island serves as the base for crew helicopters and locally built crew transfer vessels supporting the project.

David Hardy, Group EVP and CEO Americas at Ørsted, stated, “Revolution Wind is bringing local union jobs and economic development to Rhode Island and Connecticut, and it will deliver clean offshore wind power to hundreds of thousands of homes in the region.”

As the project progresses, it represents a significant step towards Rhode Island and Connecticut’s climate goals and the expansion of the offshore wind industry in the United States.

“Revolution Wind will help protect the Ocean State by powering its clean energy future and will support more good union jobs in a growing industry,” U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse noted.

The Revolution Wind site is adjacent to Ørsted and Eversource’s South Fork Wind, America’s first utility-scale offshore wind farm. Ørsted also recently marked the groundbreaking for another neighboring project, Sunrise Wind, in July.
